- Belize
Belize sports the world's only jaguar preserve as well as a home for other
cats, including ocelots, margays, jaguarundis and pumas. The latter is also
known as a cougar or mountain lion. Ancient Maya aborigines worshipped jaguars
and today still revere and fear the creatures. During your jungle wanderings,
you might come across the rather scary tapir, or mountain cow, Belize's
national animal. Think crossbreeding of a pig and cow weighing up to 650
pounds.
Holiday
Lettings - Belize
A tiny country with a Caribbean coastline, lying between Guatemala and Mexico,
Belize is distinct from its Central American neighbours with a laid back
atmosphere more like its island neighbours. Belize is primarily English-speaking,
and has breathtaking Mayan remains and great scuba diving.
Lonely
Planet - Belize
This tiny nation is so laid-back it's almost comatose. Dabbling its toes
in the Caribbean Sea, Belize has more in common with its island neighbors
than the fiery volatility of Central America - its history is thoroughly
coup-free. Soak up the glorious natural wonders and rich cultural history.
