Travel Guide - Montserrat
A small volcanic island, originally settled by Irish immigrants fleeing
persecution, Montserrat is off the beaten Caribbean track. Its size is tiny
(39 square miles). It has beautiful beaches, hills, forests, rivers and
waterfalls. It's known as the 'Emerald Isle of the Caribbean' and is the
only west indian island that has St.Patrick's day as a national holiday.
Hiking, nature watching and climbing are favourite ways to spend the day
on the island. It is a British Overseas Territory.

True to its Emerald Isle nickname, the lushness of this 38-square-mile pear-shaped
island evokes Ireland, only with a much milder and sunnier climate. Once
again, the volcanoes provide a plus. That is to say, Montserrat's soil is
made super-fertile from volcanic ash tossed over the fields and meadows
of fair Killarney overseas. You will see no end of tropical greenery and
"bloomery" in this Irish-flavoured isle of smiles.
Holiday
Lettings - Montserrat
Montserrat is recovering from the 1995 volcanic explosion which changed
the island’s geography forever. Some areas remain off limits, but outside
these parts Montserrat is lush and mountainous, with excellent scuba diving.
This tiny island in the Lesser Antilles still offers a warm welcome and
a very personalised break.
Lonely
Planet - Montserrat
Montserrat has survived hurricanes and more than one devastating volcanic
eruption. Split into the Safe Zone, Daytime Entry Zone and Exclusion Zone,
the tiny island continues to rise from the ashes. With volcanic rock covering
the dusty roads, no stoplights, only two hotels and a smattering of guesthouses,
Montserrat is truly like no place on the planet.
