Lithuania Over sixtyfive thousand square kilometres of picturesque plains diffused with hills and lakes await you in the Republic of Lithuania, the largest of the three Baltic States. Most of the Baltic shoreline is separated from the open sea by a long narrow strip of sand dunes called the Curonian Spit; the body of water behind the spit is the Curonian Lagoon. Klaipeda, Lithuania's only commercial port is situated where the lagoon meets the open sea. The unique expanses of nature await you. Become acquainted with the larger cities of Vilnius, Kaunas, and Klaipeda. Listen to the ancient Baltic Lithuanian language akin to Sanskrit. Buy amber, linen or clay pot souvenirs… |

Holidays
Lithuania is the southern most of the Baltic countries, the largest and
arguably the least known. The capital of Lithuania is Vilnius, a vibrant,
optimistic and cultured city. A Vilnius City Break is a perfect introduction
to Lithuania. Cobbled streets and stunning architecture, together with church
domes and spires filling the skyline make Vilnius incredibly picturesque.

Since gaining independence from the Soviet Union in the 1990s, Lithuania,
like its neighbours Latvia and Estonia has had to grow up very quickly and
modernise. Now held up as an example of what can be possible, Lithuania
is now a member of the EU, and has one of the most dynamic economies in
Europe. Not bad for a country that up until 1992 no one had really heard
of. With friendly locals, and rivalling Riga's claim to the title of the
new Prague, the capital city Vilnius is a great place to spend a few days
relaxing and sight seeing and within the old town there are some great bars
and clubs. One of Vilnius' major tourist attractions is the city museum
in the former KGB / Gestapo offices, where former inmates give guided tours
of the cells and "interrogation" chambers.
