Travel - Vatican City Vatican City (Citta del Vaticano), also incorrectly known as but popularly synonymous with the Holy See (Santa Sede) , is the last Papal state in existence and the temporal seat of the Pope, head of the worldwide Catholic Church. Situated within the city of Rome in Italy, the Vatican is the world's smallest state. Outside the Vatican City itself, 13 buildings in Rome and Castel Gandolfo, the Pope's summer residence, also enjoy extraterritorial rights. On April 19, 2005, Josef Cardinal Ratzinger was elected as Pope Benedict XVI. |
Vatican City
Tours
Meet the new head of the Roman Catholic Church. Your visit to Rome should
include if at all possible a Papal Audience. It is quite difficult to obtain
reservations for this limited attendance occasion especially in high season.
Reservations must be made in advance (the general rule is at least 2 weeks
prior to your desired audience) and the only way to guarantee this is in
person. Staff will fill out the necessary papers and ensure that you receive
your reservation.
Italian
Visits - Vatican
Vatican City - or just "The Vatican" - is one of two independent
countries completely surrounded by Italy. The other of course is the Most
Serene Republic of San Marino in the north east. But The Vatican is smaller,
indeed, it is the smallest country in the world, both by land area (.44
sq km) and by population (less than 1000).
Lonely
Planet - Holy See
Not many religions actually own a country, but Catholicism isn't just any
religion. The Holy See (Vatican City) is probably per square foot the richest
independent state in the world, making up for its total lack of natural
resources with an astonishing collection of priceless art treasures.
